Does elliptical count as steps on Fitbit?
The steps and distance recorded while using an elliptical are about half of what they actually are as reported by the elliptical, as well as compared to walking at the same speed & distance. I use the handle bars, and have also used the elliptical without the handle bars and mimicked a jogging motion.
Does it matter which exercise you choose on Fitbit?
We recommend using the exercise related to your activity to get the most accurate data. E.g., if you go for a run but start "Kickboxing" on your Tracker, your calories burned might not be accurate because the activities don't match. If your exercise isn't included on the list, we recommend choosing "Workout".

Is The Fitbit more accurate than the elliptical?
The most accurate HR monitors are the chest monitors. Wrist and hand monitors are less than optimal. If you're using a chest monitor with your elliptical machine than I'd go with the elliptical. If you're using one of those handlebars, then I'd probably go with the Fitbit as long as you have a fairly tight fit.

The automatic detection is a feature called SmartTrack. For example when using the elliptical machine make sure you have the moving bars so your device detects the motion and record the activity itself, once an Elliptical activity is saved on your account it should show on the Recent Exercise area.
